Facial line fillers

What happens to our face as we age?

Facial lines result from repetitive facial movement in skin that has been damaged and has lost collagen and elastic tissue. Important predisposing factors are skin thickness which is genetically determined, sun damage and smoking.

If your skin is beginning to sag or droop down you can obtain significant benefits by using facial fillers designed to replace and re-stimulate your own collagen production in the skin.

How can dermal fillers help?

Temporary dermal fillers are an instant way to a fresher, younger and smoother look.

Dermal fillers are clear gels, which add volume to facial skin when injected in small quantities, instantly smoothing out lines and wrinkles and adding volume to the face if needed. They are often used to enhance the lip line, remove smokers or lipstick bleed lines and give volume to the lips. They are a highly purified and slightly modified form of the naturally occurring substance in our skin called hyaluronic acid, which gives the skin a fuller and firmer texture and allows it to retain water.

Are they safe?

The products used contain no animal protein so the risk of any reaction is minimal. They have been used worldwide since 1995 and have been shown to be extremely safe with data showing that side effects are extremely rare. They are fully biodegradable in the skin; however, the effects can last between 6 and 18 months depending on product used. Longer lasting results can be achieved on certain areas of the face if combined with Botox®/Xeomin® treatments.

Will I need any anaesthetic?

The procedure can be painful for some people, so the injections are given following the application of a local anaesthetic cream which is usually very effective. The lip area is more sensitive and some people prefer to have a local anaesthetic dental block prior to lip treatment.

What can I expect after treatment?

The improvement is immediate and most people will only experience a little redness and slight temporary swelling at the site of the injection. Any swelling usually settles after a day or two. Swelling after lip treatment can last longer, sometimes up to a week.

The benefits from treatment can last between 6 and 24 months depending on which product is used. The filler is gradually broken down by the body, however it has been shown that repeated treatments do stimulate the body to produce more of your own collagen, and that after each successive treatment, the benefits do last longer.
